In the late 50’s society began to realise that tobacco cigarettes cause a lot of health issues. As a result of smoking, more and more smoker developed pulmonary diseases such as cancer and pulmonary emphysema. Smoking began to become less accepted and less popular. Unfortunately, nicotine is an addictive substance which causes high dependence, which makes it very hard for people to quit smoking.

The concept of the electronic cigarette was first patented in 1963 by Herbert A. Gilbert. However, his idea never reached the manufacturing stage. In 2003, a Chinese pharmacist, HokLik invents the electronic cigarette and promotes it as a safer and cleaner way of inhaling nicotine. He started creating the concept, as his father died from lung cancer, as a result of smoking. HokLikis patenting his invention on 2003, and in 2004 he brings it to the Chinese market with the help of his employer, Golden Dragon Holdings. Golden Dragon Holdings changes the name of the company to Ruyan which literally means “almost like smoke”. Ruyan Group continued to develop and manufacture electronic cigarettes and became one of the most successful manufacturers of electronic cigarettes worldwide.

Dr. Sam Han, CEO of Cixi E-Cig Technology, contributed greatly to the further development of electronic cigarettes. He has four patents in the United States and two in China, all of them regarding e-cigarettes and e-liquid technology. Similar to Dr HokLik, Dr Han was an avid smoker for 40 years before starting to work on e-cigarette technology, to help himself and others to make the switch from smoking to vaping. Dr Han continues his research to this day.
